A reopened mine began delivering fossil fuels from Queensland’s Darling Downs region.

New Hope Corporation (NHC) recently transported its first coal freight via rail from the $1 billion New Acland Coal Stage 3 Expansion, 53km northwest of Toowoomba.

The 42-wagon train departed from the Jondaryan Rail Loadout Facility on 16 October 2023, destined for the Port of Brisbane.

“Monday’s trainload of stage 3 coal from Jondaryan to the Port of Brisbane was New Acland mine’s first shipment of coal in more than two years,” NHC mine general manager Dave O’Dwyer said in a public statement.

“Stage three coal will be stockpiled at the Port of Brisbane before it is shipped to our international clients in Asia who want our high-quality, low emissions coal.”

About 600 local workers will be employed during peak construction at the mine. A further 400 full-time team members will be required once operational.

More than 90 per cent of the current workforce lives within 50km of the site.
