Fossil fuels will continue to play an essential role in the Australian economy, an advocate said.

The Federal Government not only wants coal and gas production to continue but also to ramp up because it is “fundamental” to national growth.

“The recent energy crisis highlights the importance of gas and coal … [and] our gas and coal play a critical role in meeting global energy demand and providing our neighbours with secure and dependable energy sources,” Federal Resources and Northern Australia Minister Madeleine King said at the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC).

“Net zero cannot be achieved without the resources sector. We will need to mine more minerals, not less.”

King also reassured the industry and more than 100 foreign delegates that new coal and gas will continue to be produced.

“If the environmental and economic credentials stack up, and projects receive all the necessary approvals, the government will support new developments,” she said according to the Australian Associated Press.

More than 7500 individuals confirmed attendance to the Sydney event, which attracted dozens of anti-mining activists and a strong police presence over two days.
