Earthquake disrupts production at Kalgoorlie gold mine for up to 2 months

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake has damaged the Raleigh underground gold mine near Kalgoorlie in WA, resulting in a temporary disruption of production that mine owners claim could continue for 6-8 weeks.

The earthquake occurred last week on 26 February with no injuries or fatalities being reported by the company or WA media. However the quake  forced the evacuation of the Frog’s Leg and Homestead underground gold mines.

In a statement, owners of the mine, Northern Star said,“Following an earthquake in the Kalgoorlie region on 26 February, some damage was incurred at the Raleigh underground mine which is part of the 51% East Kundana Joint Venture (EKJV)”.

“Production at the Raleigh mine will be temporarily disrupted for 6-8 weeks in order to rectify the situation, which may delay 3000 to 5000 ounces of gold production this year,”

Northern Star claims that its Rubicon and Hornet mines were unaffected by the tremors.
