A mineral producer is disturbed by circumstances surrounding a workplace death.
Mineral Resources (MinRes) recently expressed shock and sadness about Kieren McDowall’s fatality at the Onslow Iron Project.
At about 4pm on 12 June 2023 the 20-year-old contractor passed away in an undisclosed construction “incident” at the Ken’s Bore site.
“Chris Ellison and other senior leaders immediately travelled to site to offer support during this devastating period, and the board acknowledges the ongoing efforts of the company to provide care and support for those impacted by this tragedy,” the proponent said in its latest annual report.
The business promised to learn lessons from the tragedy and keep workers healthy. “Care and support” has been offered to workers and contractors through an employee assistance service provider.
“MinRes is committed to understanding and learning from this incident, which is a tragic reminder of the inherent risks within our industry and reinforces the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to safety,” the report said.
“This focus extends to mental health … [and] by encouraging open and honest communication about mental wellbeing, MinRes is fostering a safer and more supportive work environment.”
The State Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety and WA Police earlier inspected the site.
Investigations were continuing at the time of publication.
