Family friendly roster win for Gorgon employees

Union members voted overwhelmingly in support of a change to the Gorgon roster, the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has announced.

Ninety-three per cent of members voted ‘yes’ on a more family friendly roster, 23 days on, 10 days off, at the Gorgon liquefied natural gas project on Barrow Island.

“The members’ victory on Gorgon is the result of three strong unions working together, smart delegates, effective negotiation and solid union density,” WA State Secretary Steve McCartney said.

Our AMWU delegates and members are our strength and they stood together to fight for family friendly rosters, action on bed busts, peer support, better communication facilities on the job and fair pay.

“Our proud members have stared down Chevron, one of the largest and most powerful multinational corporations in the world, and won.

“Having worked 13 weeks’ on and 1 week off rosters in the 1980’s and been involved with campaigns to reduce them for thirty years, I am proud of the central role our union has once again played in raising the standards for all Australian workers.”

Earlier this month, unions reached an agreement with employers at the Barrow Island project, averting proposed strike action.

The deal provided for a change in the 26/9 roster, as well as a 5 per cent pay rise.

The CFMEU, AMWU and ETU endorsed the agreement and called on members to vote in its favour.
