A worker has been crushed to death at Newcrest’s Telfer gold and copper mine in the Pilbara, WA. The accident happened yesterday morning around 9.30am and is believed to have occurred near a tailings dam.
Initial reports suggest the Exact Mining Group contractor was crushed by polypipe.
All work on site has been suspended and staff have been offered counselling.
A Newcrast spokesperson said, “We send our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the man, and are providing any assistance we can at this time,”
WA’s Department of Mines and Petroleum is currently investigating the incident.
This is the second mining fatality in Australia in five days after a worker was killed in a collision with a truck at the Ravensworth coal mine in the Hunter Valley of NSW.
