Fifty workers at Yancoal’s Abel underground mine at Black Hill in New South Wales have lost their jobs as the company looks to cut costs through business restructuring.
A spokesperson for Yancoal, James Rickards, told the Newcastle Herald yesterday that the company was forced into making the tough decision due to sluggish international markets and increasing cost pressures.
The Newcastle Herald reports that, “28 production workers, 11 tradespeople and nine mine deputies had been made redundant in the restructure.”
Peter Jordan from the CFMEU told the Newcastle Herald he was concerned about the future of 35 workers who had been transferred to the Abel mine after a double fataility at Yancoal’s Austar mine earlier this year resulted in a reduction in production targets at that mine.
‘‘They’ve told us they lost $21 million this year at Abel and they expect those losses to double, so while we are resuming talks with them on Friday we are also concerned about the futures of the guys who will have to go back to Austar,’’ Mr Jordan said.
