The West Australian Government has thrown its support behind the development of gas reserves using the controversial fraccing technique in a bid to boost economic activity.
Developing shale gas could unlock billions for the WA economy, helping to create a wave of long term jobs, according to WA’s Mining and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion.
Marmion is trying to allay legitimate concerns about potential environmental damage as a result of fracking, especially the pollution of water supplies.
“I strongly believe we can achieve this without compromising the environment or safety.”
Marmion also called on certain environmentalists to come clean with the reasons for their opposition:
“They need to be honest and up-front about their real objective, it is not about fraccing…it is to prevent natural gas becoming a major fuel source for the generation of energy as opposed to renewable energy.”
