Queensland’s resources sector has applauded the Queensland Government for offering free Certificate III trade training courses for year-12 graduates in high-demand skills areas.
Chief Executive of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Ian Macfarlane said the free courses would encourage students to take up training in skills shortage areas.
‘According to several data sources, and reports from our own members, there is an increasing demand for metal fitters and machinists, diesel fitters, boilermakers and electricians,’ said Mr Macfarlane.
‘These free courses, available to year-12 graduates within a year of leaving school, will help bring us our next generation of skilled trades people,’ he said.
‘It’s fantastic to see that there’s already been great uptake of Electrotechnology Electrician, Engineering – Mechanical Trade, Automotive Electrical Technology, and Engineering – Fabrication Trade at the Mount Isa TAFE campus
‘I’m sure this will be the case around the state for these fee-free Certificate III courses.
‘I commend the Queensland Government for its foresight in creating opportunities for our young people to gain the training they need to enter highly skilled and paid careers in our sector, which accounts for one in eight jobs in Queensland.
‘The QRC works closely with the Queensland Government through our Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) and its 45 schools throughout the state to provide opportunities for our young people, particularly those in regional areas.’
