The Mount Owen mine complex in the Hunter Valley may be given a new lease on life with Glencore applying to extend operations at the mine until 2030.
Glencore says extension of the mine’s north pit will cost the company $153 million and would create 330 new jobs in construction.
The Mt Owen Complex comprises the Mt Owen, Ravensworth East and Glendell open cut coal mines situated between Singleton and Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.
According to the ABC the extension includes a rail overpass over the main northern rail line and a new dual lane bridge over Bowmans Creek to replace the existing single lane structure.
An EIS for the project says the application also provides the opportunity to consolidate existing development consents for Mount Owen and the Ravensworth East mines, but does not include ongoing operations at the Glendell mine.
