A miner has collapsed and died at Anglo American’s Grasstree Mine near Middlemount.
An Anglo American spokesperson has confirmed that the incident happened yesterday and that operations have ceased while investigations are conducted.
Co-workers tried to revive the employee, who was found collapsed underground, before bringing the employee to the surface where they continued the resuscitation, without success.
Speaking to the ABC, a spokesperson for the Mines Department said, “the electrician may have suffocated on “noxious atmosphere” when he entered a closed area of the mine.”
In a statement, Anglo American said they were working with the Mines Inspectorate and the Queensland Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation into the fatality.
The company is offering counselling services to the deceased employee’s family and all other employees.
No other personnel were injured in the incident.
