The Qld Government has announced plans to ban all mining on the the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve and the Wenlock River on Cape York Peninsula , taking Cape Alumina by surprise and triggering an immediate trading halt.
Cape Alumina had been gearing up to begin construction on their Cape York Peninsula bauxite mine next year and were caught unawares by the announcement.
The ABC reports a company spokesman said the State Government’s announcement had taken the company by surprise, and it is bitterly disappointed.
Premier Campbell Newman said the declaration would protect one of Queensland’s most environmentally significant areas.
“When finalised, this declaration will protect these unique areas from open cut and strip mining, and other activities that risk widespread impacts to their ecological integrity.” Newman said.
“We plan to offer similar protections to environmentally important areas across Queensland under legislation to be introduced into State Parliament today by my colleague the Deputy Premier.”
Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell said the Newman Government was delivering on its key commitment for Cape York to provide opportunities for sustainable economic development, balanced with the protection of the Cape’s natural environmental areas.
“By protecting the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in perpetuity, this government recognises the value of protecting this exceptional piece of biodiversity for Queensland for future generations.”
Bindi Irwin says the declaration will ensure the Wildlife Reserve will continue to honour her father’s conservation work.
“It’s the most pristine land on planet Earth and we are just thrilled,” she said.
“This is probably the greatest day of my life so really happy, completely amazed and just, wow.
“We’ll continue to carry on in dad’s footsteps and make sure this land continues – this is amazing.”
