The boat people detention centre on Nauru is “certainly better than mining camps in Australia”, according to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.
The Minister made the astonishing admission on a visit to Nauru earlier this week adding that “… the standard of medical care and services I thought was very high.” It is uncertain if this comment was meant in relation to the standard at mining camps.
The contentious remarks were made after being asked by ABC journalists what Ms Bishop thought of conditions at the Naurau centre.
“They were certainly better than mining camps in Australia,” she said.
Federal Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, who is responsible for resources and mining as part of his portfolio, is yet to comment.
