A multinational resources company promoted a female energy leader as its new national head of business.

BHP recently elevated Geraldine Slattery as its next Australia president responsible for the company’s domestic operations.

Slattery was previously petroleum president and oversaw a successful $40 billion merger between Woodside Petroleum and BHP Group’s oil and gas assets in Australia, Algeria, Canada, Mexico, Tobago, Trinidad and the United States.

“Geraldine has navigated the petroleum business through the intensity of the successful merger and integration with Woodside, while delivering outstanding business performance,” BHP CEO Mike Henry said in a public statement.

She replaces Edgar Basto who will become the first-ever chief operating officer (COO) at the same company. Basto will be responsible for BHP’s operating system, global performance, and health safety and environment functions.

“As COO Edgar will ensure that operational capability is central to our growth agenda, and he will drive strengthened operational leadership across the company,” Henry said.

“These two appointments will enable us to build upon the strong performance we have delivered in recent years to drive even better safety and productivity outcomes.”
