Dig deep this year and support Movember by signing up to the foundation’s 2014 Mining Challenge – all you’ve got to do is let it grow.
Mining sites around the country, from Coober Pedy to Kalgoorlie, Mount Morgan to Mount Isa and across the Pilbara, are taking part in Movember’s Mining Challenge, which is one of the 11 official Challenges aimed at uniting some of Australia’s largest companies across industries in the name of men’s health.
Last year, the Challenge raised in excess of $1 million due to the wonderful participation of 2,883 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from the mining and natural resources sector. The last three years have seen the industry raise more than $2.4 million. Hopefully this year there will just as much moustache or, at least, stubble to break the surface.
To get entrants motivated, there are prizes on offer for the highest fundraising team, highest fundraising individual and best moustache.
On a serious note, the mining sector is recognising the importance of a healthy workplace: many industry leaders from companies such as Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Chevron, Santos and NRW Mining have been continuing supporters of Movember’s Mining Challenge by sprouting a mo and encouraging participation among staff.
Movember Business Engagement Manager Tom Betts said, “We know the Mo is a great conversation starter and can be a catalyst for change in the workplace. A month of camaraderie and a little healthy Mo growing competition can certainly have a positive impact on morale”.
This year marks Movember’s 12th birthday, encouraging Mo Bros and Mo Sistas the world over to support their locally grown moustaches by registering, growing (or supporting the growth of) and then celebrating at an official end of month event. By committing to the challenge, Mo Bros effectively become live billboards, and through their Mo growing efforts, raise vital awareness and funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.
