The construction of a salt mine near Alice Springs is one step closer, with a $120 million deal for mining machinery signed on Tuesday giving the project a major boost.
Construction of Tellus’ Chandler Salt Mine, located 12km south of Alice Springs, will begin in early 2017, with the first four-year phase of the project to create 360 jobs, according to NT News.
Construction of infrastructure and a 31km haulage road will take about a year, but it will be three years until digging hits salt beds, about 800m underground.
The deal is expected to be the first of several in coming weeks to cement the future of the $464 million project.
The Chandler deposit is potentially Australia’s largest underground multi-mineral rock salt deposit and is a world-class asset.
With an expected initial mine life of 25 years, the resource could possibly support Australia’s longest life mine as evidenced in Europe where salt mines with similar resources have been mined for hundreds of years.
