Farstad Shipping (Indian Pacific) has announced the redundancy of about 100 seafaring positions.
The news comes just a week after the company announced a reduction in Farstad’s Australian onshore organisation from 65 to 30 employees.
“The changes are the result of major project work off Western Australia being completed and the downturn in the oil and gas sector,” the company said in a statement.
Although Farstad has mitigated the impacts of the downturn through job-sharing arrangements with its seafarers, the company said having more seafarers than required to operate its local fleet of offshore supply vessels has become untenable.
Farstad is also closing its Melbourne administration office so that local functions can be headquartered from one location in Perth.
A transition plan is being activated to ensure the changes occur smoothly.
