The Tasmanian mining industry is showing their support of Tasmanian Devil preservation efforts by co-hosting a workshop aimed at creating opportunities to turn mining leases into devil refuges.
The Save Tasmanian Devil Project Group will conduct the workshop at Grange Resources’ Savage River on Tuesday, 26 and Wednesday, 27 August 2014.
The Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council’s CEO, Jeremy Kouw, said the workshop is a great opportunity for the mining industry to work with conservation groups to achieve a worthy goal.
“It demonstrates we are proactively and collaboratively working in understanding the latest science and then applying the knowledge on our sites for the benefit of local devil populations,” Mr Kouw said.
The workshop is a result of Save the Tasmanian Devil Project Group’s Program Manager, David Pemberton, presenting at the Tasmanian Minerals conference in May this year on the work he and his team have been doing on the Save the Tasmanian Devil campaign. In his presentation, David spoke about the exciting potential for mining sites to provide refuges where devils can thrive alongside mining activity.
The Save the Tasmanian Devil Program team attending the workshop will include, among others, David Pemberton and renowned devil expert, Nick Mooney.
