The worker who died at the Boggabri Coal Mine yesterday morning was reportedly operating an open cabin cherry picker at the time of accident and was crushed up against a “metal structure” that was part of the construction of a new coal crusher.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the rigger was in his 30s, and was 15 metres above ground when the incident occurred.
The man went into “traumatic cardiac arrest” when the NSW Ambulance arrived and died at the scene from what’s been described as traumatic head and neck injuries.
The Daily Telegraph is also reporting that the man came from the Gold Coast and that he had a young family.
The coal crusher under construction was the Thiess Sedgman Joint Venture Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP).
A Thiess spokesperson said, “Thiess and Sedgman extend their deepest sympathies to the employee’s family and full support is being extended to them”
NSW Mine Safety Investigation inspectors are conducting enquiries and police are also investigating the accident. Counselling is being offered to co-workers.
It’s the third death on a NSW mine site in the past 6 weeks after 2 men died at the Austar coal mine near Cessnock mid April. It’s also the seventh death in mining in Australia since the start of the year.
