A 32-year-old worker has been killed at a Rio Tinto mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
The Department of Mines and Petroleum confirmed the maintenance worker died at the Channar iron ore mine, 17 kilometres southeast of Paraburdoo, at 10.30pm on Sunday.
DMP Mines Safety Director Andrew Chaplyn said the Landsdale man was working on a drill rig at the time of the death, according to ABC News.
A spokesman from Rio Tinto said the company had advised authorities and was assisting with investigations.
“The company is fully supporting the employee’s family and work colleagues during this difficult time,” a Rio Tinto spokesman told WA Today.
“We have advised authorities of the incident and are assisting them with their investigations.”
The DMP are investigating the incident, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
The death is first Australian mining fatality of 2016.
